Writing Letters, Playing Checkers May Delay Alzheimer’s

Simple brain-stimulating activities, like writing letters or playing checkers, may be able to delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease by up to 5 years, some recent research has found. The research specifically looked at the effects in older adults, finding that these activities are still beneficial even if started at age 80 or older.

“Each thing we learn and know is like a book on a shelf. As new books are added, the library grows bigger and bigger,” said Dr. Joyce Gomes-Osman, a voluntary assistant professor of neurology. “...building a library of information in your brain creates a buffer for memory loss.”

The research looked at findings from three separate studies, all published within the last few years. Overall, activities that engage the brain— checkers, chess, journaling, crossword puzzles, reading— all appear to have beneficial effects for lowering dementia risk or delaying onset.

“Reading, puzzles, art, conversation, games, and work are just a few examples [of mental exercise],” said Dr. David Hunter, an assistant professor of neurology. “Really, the only rule is that sitting around watching TV doesn’t count.”

PFAS Indicator Found in Multiple Feminine Hygiene Products

Researchers recently analyzed over 100 “period products” for the presence of fluorinated compounds, which are chemical indicators of potentially harmful per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The products included liners, pads, tampons, cups, and underwear.

PFAS are a category of chemicals with stick-, stain-, and water-resistant properties. They persist in the environment and the human body and are linked to negative health outcomes, including a higher risk of certain cancers and immune suppression.

According to the findings, fluorine, an indicator of PFAS, was found in multiple products, although no specifics about which products it was in were given. The researchers will now go on to test for the presence of 40 individual PFAS compounds.

Though researchers did not yet reveal which product brands may contain PFAS, they did note that fluorine was present in the wrappers of many pads and tampons as well as the outer layer of some period underwear.

The Real Reason You Lose Muscle Mass as You Age

The average person has lost about 30% of their muscle mass by the time they hit age 60— but have you ever wondered why this happens?

As you might imagine, it has a lot to do with protein, which is a critical macronutrient for muscle health. However, muscle mass loss is NOT simply due to a lack of protein in the diet but rather to the fact that your body uses it less efficiently. You can find out exactly why this happens and how to start making protein work for (rather than against) your body in The Real Reason You're Losing Muscle Mass as You Age, and How to Stop It and Even Reverse It. This free information is written by the highly respected formulator, Dr. Frank Shallenberger, who is board certified by the American Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. You’ll discover the 3 specific reasons people lose so much lean body mass as they age as well as how Dr. Shallenberger recommends solving this problem and easily boosting both muscle and bone mass.

13 Surprising Health Benefits of Walnuts

Walnuts might seem like an ordinary nut, but they are so nutritious that experts have gathered at a walnut conference every year for the last 50 years to discuss new research findings. Those findings show that this humble nut is extremely rich in antioxidants and omega 3s and can fight inflammation. Walnuts also promote healthy gut bacteria when eaten regularly, may lower type 2 diabetes risk, and could help lower blood pressure. The list goes on… (More)

Why You Might Feel Older (or Younger) Than You Are

Have you ever heard the saying, “Age is just a number?” Well, there might be some truth to it, since the number of birthdays you’ve had doesn’t always match up with what’s going on inside your body— known as “biological age”. Things like stress, inflammation, and exposure to air pollution are all thought to negatively impact biological age (making you feel older). Exercising, eating a healthy diet, and having access to clean air and water can do the opposite, making you feel younger than your designated age. (More)

Exercise, Yoga Can Improve Lung Function for Adults with Asthma

Exercise has long been viewed as a trigger for asthma and something that worsens health for asthma sufferers. But while exercise-induced asthma attacks should absolutely be taken seriously, some new research shows that long-term aerobic exercise combined with yoga and breathing exercises can actually improve lung function for asthmatics. However, it’s important to seek expert guidance before starting a new exercise program and to take things slowly. (More)

High Intake of Fruits, Vegetables Linked to Lower Miscarriage Risk

Eating a preconception and pregnancy diet full of fruits, vegetables, grains, and even dairy could lower the risk of a miscarriage, according to a new study. High fruit and vegetable intake was linked to the greatest risk reduction— 61% for fruits and 41% for vegetables— while grains came in at a 33% risk reduction. Higher dairy intake was a surprising addition and was linked to a 37% lower risk of miscarriage. (More)

Serious Health Risks of Fragrance in Skincare + How to Avoid It

Fragrance might sound like a harmless, even appealing, ingredient. In truth, it’s really a catch-all term that often refers to a “cocktail” of chemicals that aren’t listed on the label. Some of these chemicals are linked to allergies and skin sensitivities, while others can cause hormone disruption and may even increase cancer risk. The only way to avoid them is by checking the label on all skincare products for “fragrance” or “parfum”. (More)
